Where to File After April 15

Tax Help Colorado has officially closed our tax sites for the 2020 tax season.

We know many taxpayers rely on the free tax sites that we and other VITA programs provide and want to make you aware of other free tax preparation options for families.

GetYourRefund

We encourage you to utilize the remote tax preparation service through GetYourRefund.org. A new program by Code for America in partnership with VITA sites like Tax Help Colorado is available to households making $66,000 or less. This new service allows IRS-certified volunteers to prepare your returns remotely after you complete an online intake process and upload your documents using your smartphone.

How It Works

  • You’ll answer questions and fill out financial information through their simple form.
  • Gather your documents. Check out our tax document checklist to see what all you’ll need.
  • You’ll then chat with an IRS-Certified preparer either via phone or email.
  • An IRS-Certified team will then prepare and review your Federal and State tax returns.
  • They’ll help you file your tax returns electronically (if you want) and walk you through options on how to receive your tax refund or pay taxes owed.
  • Check the status of your federal tax return and Colorado state return.

MyFreeTaxes.com

Through United Way’s partnership with TaxSlayer, you can prepare and file a free federal return and unlimited state returns. There are no requirements to pay for certain forms or services. You can also get help from an IRS-certified call specialist via the MyFreeTaxes Helpline.

How It Works

  • Check here to see which forms MyFreeTaxes covers.
  • Gather your documents. Check out our tax document checklist to see what all you’ll need.
    • In addition, you’ll need an email address and a copy of last year’s return.
  • The tax software will take you through a variety of questions to help you complete your tax return on your own.
  • Once you’ve finished the return, you’ll use your 2019 AGI (Found on Line 8 of last year’s 1040) to electronically file your return!
  • After filing, check the status of your federal tax return and Colorado state return.
