In an effort to connect more families to valuable tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit, The Piton Foundation, in partnership with the Colorado Community College System, launched Tax Help Colorado at the Community College of Aurora in 2007. Since that time, we’ve helped 82,800 families file their taxes and claim over $152 million in refunds.
From its inception, Tax Help Colorado offered community college students the opportunity to gain college credit by providing free tax preparation on their campuses. This strategy was adopted from a model created by Tax Help New Mexico.
Soon after opening our doors at community colleges, we expanded to four-year universities and high schools. Now, over a decade later, Tax Help Colorado continues to innovate and grow to better meet the needs of our families and offer additional resources. In the past few years we’ve expanded to include alternative models like Drop Off and Do It Yourself (with help), launched a community volunteer training program, and opened sites in spaces frequented by hard-working families, like child care centers and housing authorities.
Learn what we were able to accomplish with the help of dozens of community partners and hundreds of volunteers during the 2019 tax season.
The Piton Foundation
For more than 40 years, The Piton Foundation, which is part of Gary Community Investments, has been committed to improving the lives of Colorado’s low-income children and their families by increasing access to quality early childhood and youth development opportunities, and fostering healthy family and community environments.
In addition to investing in transformative solutions at the program, policy and systems levels, Piton operates a suite of programs, including Tax Help Colorado, that focuses on supporting families and driving social change for low-income communities.
Get Ahead Colorado
For over 30 years The Piton Foundation has conducted the Tax Credits for Working Families Public Information Campaign, now known as Get Ahead Colorado, to increase the number of eligible families receiving the EITC, the Child Tax Credits and other valuable credits that help families get ahead. Tax Help Colorado partners with Get Ahead Colorado to promote the free tax sites to qualifying families. IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
Tax Help Colorado is one of 250+ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) programs across the country. VITA sites are overseen by the IRS to ensure taxpayers are afforded a quality service. In order to operate a VITA site, programs must adhere to rules and guidelines set by the IRS. The rules tell us what types of returns we can and can’t do and the type of documents we can accept from taxpayers. Under no circumstances can a VITA program charge taxpayers or work outside of the outlined scope. While we wish we could help everyone, we’re proud to uphold these standards to provide high-quality service to taxpayers.
