Help us reach more families by joining our network of 40+ partners!

The availability of free tax assistance matters to families struggling to make ends meet. As a program of The Piton Foundation, we value working together and engaging communities to overcome persistent challenges. With your help, we can provide a valuable resource to those who need it most. Whether you’re able to give your time, talents or treasure, they need your help.

“Taxpayers are thankful for the quality service and happy when they leave the tax site with accurately prepared returns. They are often grateful to not only have their return completed for free, but to have the information explained in a way they can understand. This educational piece of Tax Help Colorado is invaluable to everyone.”

Gina Jones, Accounting Professor, Aims Community College

Ways to partner with us

We have partnerships with schools, government agencies, nonprofits and for-profit companies. Learn about our current opportunities below, and please reach out to us if you have an idea that isn’t listed!

Since nearly our inception we’ve partnered with community colleges, high schools and four-year universities to provide students valuable learning opportunities that allow them to positively impact their communities.

Partnership Opportunities

Teach income taxes: Our schools offer Tax Help Colorado to their students in a variety of ways.

  • For credit: Schools offer the program as an accounting class and practicum for 4 credits (ACC 132/133).
  • Bootcamp: Students who’ve already taken individual income tax take a short bootcamp to advance their knowledge and prepare for tax season.
  • Non-credit course: Schools can offer the course to the public and students of other disciplines by offering it as a non-credit course.
  • High school: The course can be offered as concurrent enrollment or as a CTE class.

Hands-on experiences: Schools can connect their students’ skills to serving their community and gaining valuable real-world experiences through one of three options:

  1. Host a site: Schools operate a tax site on campus where instructors act as “site coordinators” who assist students as they prepare returns.
  2. Remote tax prep: Students prepare returns dropped off at other locations while in their classroom.
  3. Support another site: If a school is unable to run their own site, students can travel to a nearby, partnering site.

Tax Help Colorado Support

Trainings: Tax Help Colorado hosts two annual trainings (in the summer and fall) to ensure instructors have the necessary information and resources to successfully offer this program to their students.

Teaching resources: Each year, we offer updated curriculum and teaching resources to all partners, free of charge. Printed copies of the curriculum are available to all students.

Grants: Modest grants are available to schools to pay for the cost to run a tax site.

Administration: We provide administrative support to schools to ensure teachers and staff aren’t worrying about filling out IRS forms or answering taxpayer calls.

Student recognition: We coordinate with the Governor’s Office to obtain letters of commendation for students who volunteer over 40 hours at a tax site. For ambitious students who give over 100 hours during tax season, we nominate for them to receive the Presidential Volunteer Service Award.

Partner Highlight

Front Range Community College began partnering with Tax Help Colorado in 2011 at their Westminster campus. After their first tax season, instructor and site coordinator Kevin McFarlane expanded their program by partnering with Adams City High School and the Brighton campus. Since then they’ve partnered with many other high schools to file over 8,700 returns.

By offering free tax resources, organizations provide a pathway for families to access valuable tax credits that lift millions of families out of poverty every year.

Partnership Opportunities

Operate a tax site: In order to expand free tax assistance to more families, we need the help of partners to operate tax sites in accessible and welcoming locations. If you’re interested in utilizing your volunteers or staff to run your own site, we’re here to help. The commitment differs depending on the tax site service model that works best for you and your community.

Share your space: If your organization has a community space that is already utilized by hard-working families, you may be a good candidate to host a site. The space requirements differ based on the tax site service model that works best for your community.

Recruit volunteers: We utilize hundreds of volunteers each year to run our 35+ tax sites. Help us reach new volunteers by sharing information about our volunteer program (like our volunteer recruitment flier) or invite us to give a presentation to staff or community members. You can learn more about volunteer roles and training options, or reach out with questions.

Share outreach materials: It’s estimated that 70 percent of taxpayers qualify for free tax assistance and yet only 3 percent visit a free tax site. Help us raise awareness about free, trustworthy tax sites and the benefits of valuable tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit by ordering free outreach materials from our partners at Get Ahead Colorado.

Volunteer and site coordinator training: We provide trainings for all volunteers and site coordinators. New site coordinators are paired with a site consultant in their first year to ensure they have all the support they need.

Grants: Modest grants are available to organizations that provide their own staff or volunteers to pay for the cost of running a tax site.

Administration: We know our partners already work diligently to provide a number of services to clients and can’t think about taxes outside of tax season, but we can. Our staff is dedicated to doing all the necessary paperwork and follow-up to make sure you’re able to provide a worthwhile experience.

Partner Highlight

In 2019, we partnered with the Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales branch of Denver Public Library to run a Do-It-Yourself (with help) site. The library provided a comfortable space, computers and staff assistance; we provided a site coordinator and volunteers . In their first year, they were able to file over 100 returns. In the upcoming tax season, library staff will be trained in  tax preparation so that they are able to expand their services to three branches.

If your business is interested in connecting families to valuable financial resources, look no further than partnering with Tax Help Colorado!

Partnership Opportunities

Corporate volunteerism: Make Tax Help Colorado a volunteer opportunity for employees. Share information about our volunteer program (see our volunteer recruitment flier) or let us give a presentation to your staff about the various roles available.

Sponsor and support: Help families gain access to valuable resources in your community by sponsoring a tax site. On average, our sites return over $400,000 back to their community.

Share your space: If your organization has a community space that is already utilized by low-to moderate-income families, you may be a good candidate to host a site. The space requirements differ based on the tax site service model that works best for your community.

Promote to your employees and community: It’s estimated that 70 percent of taxpayers qualify for free tax assistance and yet only 3 percent visit a free tax site. Since 2011, we’ve had the privilege of partnering with Wells Fargo as a sponsor of the program. Through their generosity, we’ve been able to expand the program into new areas of the state. Wells Fargo staff have volunteered at tax sites to help with interpretive services, hand out snacks to waiting taxpayers and assist in greeting. We’re grateful for their continued partnership!

Help us bring more resources to your community

We operate dozens of tax sites around the state alongside our partners, but we need your help in bringing our services to more families. We’re always looking for partners regardless of location, but check out the map below to see if your location could fill a major gap for your community!
