Volunteer Conversations: Alex Leong
How long have you been a volunteer with Tax Help Colorado?
I started volunteering with Tax Help Colorado in February 2024
Tell us about your past volunteer experiences – what drew you to service?
I volunteered at the Denver Aquarium for several years as an assistant aquarist, and this is my first time volunteering with Mile High United Way. In terms of tax experience, I’ve always filed my own returns and have also assisted family members with theirs, but I don’t have any tax experience in the professional sense.
What inspired you to start volunteering with Tax Help Colorado?
Giving back to the community is important, and I’ve enjoyed meeting so many individuals who are connected to my network of family and friends.
What’s the most rewarding part of volunteering for you?
Tax returns can be challenging and overwhelming for many, and helping to ease that stress and anxiety is incredibly rewarding. There’s a great sense of fulfillment in relieving such a significant burden for others.
What’s one thing you’ve learned or gained through volunteering?
Each volunteering experience has taught me something new about tax preparation and emphasized the importance of connecting with others as individuals.
What advice would you give to someone interested in volunteering?
Just sign up and commit. Experience it firsthand, and let yourself grow from that journey.
What’s a memorable moment or story from your time at a tax site?
I was helping someone complete their tax return when they learned about their refund. They told me that money would make a big impact in their daily life. It meant they could get their car fixed, pay down some debt, and relieve some financial stress.
When you’re not doing taxes, how do you like to spend your free time?
I like tinkering with coding and electronics projects, and I’m also working toward my pilot’s license.
